Our Past, Present and Future Back in 1996, several I/O Psychologists living and working in the Bay Area began meeting for dinner to share challenges and successes. They jokingly referred to themselves as the "East Bay Women’s Consulting Dinner Group." Dinner participants typically included Edie Goldberg, Karen May, Kristi Whitney, Sharon Rose, Becca Anhalt, and Ellen Purcell. When their male colleagues wanted in on the action, Edie Goldberg decided to start a formal I/O networking group. She called around to the I/O Psychologists that she knew to see if they would be interested. Carol Moore informed Edie that during 1987 a similar I/O group used to exist. Carol had somehow inherited the list of all the Bay Area I/O psychologists and passed it along to Edie. Edie believes there was even a little bit of seed money as well! The first event was a happy hour at Scott’s Seafood in Jack London Square one week before SIOP, 1996. About 10-15 people can be credited for attending what would be BAAP’s first event! Following this event, the speaker series began. The first speaker in this series was Karen May, who gave a talk entitled "Leadership… South of the Border." BAAP boasts a dedicated group of members today - Not many professional groups can say that approximately half of the entire membership attends events on a regular basis! A key objective for BAAP is to offer meetings that showcase nationally recognized leaders in I/O Psychology and Human Resource Management. In addition, the future brings more accessible information to members via ongoing updates on the website (e.g., future events) to encourage members to remain actively involved. |
